Best European ChatGPT Alternatives in 2026: 4 EU AI Chats Compared

If you want to leave ChatGPT for a European alternative, you no longer have to settle for a half-baked toy. In 2026, four serious European AI chats cover everyday writing, live web search, and document analysis while keeping your conversations on European or Swiss servers:

  1. DentroChat: Best all-around ChatGPT Plus replacement with zero US subprocessors anywhere (payments included), real spreadsheet/chart generation, and top accuracy in our Eurostat test.
  2. Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat): Best if you want models trained in France plus workspace connectors (Gmail, Notion, Atlassian), native mobile apps, and a generous free tier.
  3. Proton Lumo: Best if you already live in the Proton ecosystem and want zero-access encryption on your stored chat history.
  4. Infomaniak Euria: Best budget option (€19/year in kSuite+) running entirely inside Infomaniak’s own Swiss datacenters.

TL;DR: Pick DentroChat if you want ChatGPT-level file creation, code execution, and the only stack with zero US companies in the chain. Pick Mistral Vibe if third-party workspace integrations matter more than avoiding Google Cloud and Stripe. Pick Lumo for encrypted chat history (and bring patience for deep research). Pick Euria for simple drafting on a Swiss budget.

Side-by-side comparison: ChatGPT vs the 4 European alternatives

“Hosted in Europe” means very different things once you read each provider’s subprocessor list and test what the chat can actually produce:

How the 4 European AI chats performed in our hands-on test

Marketing pages all promise “state-of-the-art AI.” To see how they actually behave on a real research and data task, we gave all four European AI chats the exact same prompt on their highest reasoning mode:

  • Pull the latest Eurostat household electricity prices (nrg_pc_204, band DC, all taxes included) for Germany, Sweden, and Poland.
  • Calculate the annual bill at 3,500 kWh and the exact percentage gap between the most expensive and cheapest country (true H2 2025 answer: 42.8%, Germany at €1,354.15 vs Poland at €948.15).
  • Generate a downloadable bar chart and an Excel/spreadsheet file.
  • Summarize a fake EU directive we invented (Directive (EU) 2026/1174 on residential energy price transparency) to test whether the AI would hallucinate law or catch the trick.

1. DentroChat: Best for complete EU sovereignty and real work files

We built DentroChat because we wanted a daily driver that could replace ChatGPT Plus for research, coding, document analysis, and file creation without sending a single byte or payment through a US company.

  • What it does well: Queries live sources accurately, executes code to generate real downloadable spreadsheets and charts, generates and edits images, supports voice dictation, and lets you switch between Fast, Thinking, and Creative modes mid-conversation.
  • Sovereignty: Every subprocessor is in the EU or Switzerland (see the full list): Hetzner (Germany) for hosting, Scaleway (France) for backups, European inference providers (Cortecs in Austria, which routes chat to hosts such as Infomaniak in Switzerland and Inceptron in Sweden), Black Forest Labs (Germany) for images, Linkup (France) for web search, and Mollie (Netherlands) with SEPA direct debit for payments.
  • What you give up: No native iOS/Android store app yet (works as an installable PWA), no folders/projects yet, and no third-party connectors to Gmail or Notion.

2. Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat): Best for workspace connectors and French models

Mistral renamed Le Chat to Vibe in May 2026 (chat.mistral.ai) and expanded it into a full workspace with Chat, Code, and Work modes.

  • What it does well: Mistral trains its own frontier models in Europe. Vibe is fast, creates downloadable files, reads answers aloud, ships polished iOS and Android apps, and is the only European option with deep third-party connectors (Gmail, Google Calendar, Notion, Atlassian). Its free tier is also genuinely usable for casual chat.
  • The catch: While Mistral is a French company, Mistral’s subprocessor list shows that consumer inference runs on Google Cloud, web delivery relies on Cloudflare, Vercel, and Netlify, and billing runs on Stripe. We cover this in detail in DentroChat vs Mistral: Which European AI Chat Is Actually European?.

3. Proton Lumo: Best for encrypted chat history

Lumo is Proton’s AI assistant. If you already use Proton Mail and Proton Drive, it feels immediately familiar.

  • What it does well: Stored conversations are protected with zero-access encryption, meaning Proton cannot read your saved chat history back. (Live prompts still have to be decrypted on Proton’s EU/Swiss GPUs during inference, as Proton explains openly.) In our test, Lumo was the most thorough verifier on the trick legal question.
  • The catch: On multi-step research, Lumo took ~15 minutes where others took 1 minute. It cannot run code or generate downloadable spreadsheets, Lumo Plus is a separate subscription even if you pay for Proton Unlimited, and Proton’s billing/support stack still uses US vendors (Stripe, PayPal, Chargebee, Zendesk).

4. Infomaniak Euria: Best low-cost Swiss option for everyday writing

Euria is built by Infomaniak, which owns and operates its own energy-efficient datacenters in Switzerland.

  • What it does well: Unbeatable price (€19/year bundled with kSuite+, plus a generous free tier), clean interface, voice input, kDrive integration, and Swiss bank/Twint payment rails that avoid US payment processors.
  • The catch: It has the lightest feature set: no image generation, no cross-chat memory, no code execution, and no file creation. It also struggled with numerical accuracy on our multi-country Eurostat prompt.

Which European ChatGPT alternative is closest to ChatGPT Plus?

If you rely on ChatGPT Plus for uploading PDFs, searching the live web, generating images, and getting downloadable spreadsheets or charts back, DentroChat and Mistral Vibe are the two closest replacements. Choose DentroChat if you want zero US subprocessors and higher data accuracy; choose Mistral Vibe if you need native mobile apps and connectors to Gmail or Notion.

Does any European AI chat have zero US subprocessors?

Yes. DentroChat is the only one of the four whose entire published subprocessor chain, including chat inference, web search, image generation, email delivery, and payment processing (via Mollie and SEPA), contains zero US companies. Lumo and Euria keep chat inference out of US hands, while Mistral Vibe uses Google Cloud for inference.

Why isn’t ChatGPT’s EU data residency enough for GDPR sovereignty?

Even when a US provider offers “EU data residency” on Enterprise plans, the parent company remains a US corporation subject to the US CLOUD Act. US authorities can legally compel a US provider to produce data under its control regardless of whether the physical server sits in Frankfurt, Dublin, or Virginia. True European data sovereignty requires both EU/Swiss servers and a non-US legal entity operating them.

Can European ChatGPT alternatives generate spreadsheets, charts, and images?

Yes, depending on which one you pick. DentroChat and Mistral Vibe can both generate images, run code, draw charts, and output downloadable spreadsheet files. Proton Lumo can generate images and draw charts in the chat, but cannot output downloadable spreadsheets. Infomaniak Euria is text-only and does not generate images, charts, or files.

Is there a free European alternative to ChatGPT?

Yes. Mistral Vibe and Infomaniak Euria both offer permanent free tiers with daily usage limits. Proton Lumo has a free tier, though it automatically deletes your chat history after a few days unless you upgrade to Lumo Plus. DentroChat gives you 15 free messages right after signup (no credit card required) so you can test Fast, Thinking, and Creative modes before subscribing at €12/month or €97/year.
